Self care is the best choice to treat very minor illnesses and injuries.

Contact NHS Direct if you are ill and have any questions about health. The service can also help you to find health services in your local area.


Visit your local pharmacy when you are suffering from a simple health problem which does not need to be seen by a nurse or doctor.

Your pharmacist can supply emergency contraception without an appointment.

Your local or regular pharmacist can give you advice on common illnesses and the medicines you need to treat them.

Speak to your pharmacist if you have run out of your repeat medication.


Family Planning / Sexual Health Clinic

We provide all aspects of contraception, sexually transmitted infection screening, advice and referral for women’s and men’s health matters.  This includes:

Contraceptive methods: Oral Contraception; Injections; Implants; Inter Uterine Contraceptive devices.

Sexual Health Screening: Chlamydia; Gonorrhoea; Syphilis; HIV and more.

We also provide: Pregnancy Advisory Clinics which can be accessed via Walk In Clinics or GP referrals and Cervical Cytology Clinics which can be accessed by Walk In or appointments.

GP, Dental and Out of Hours Services

GP and Dental Surgeries can be found locally across South Wales. You can make an appointment with your registered doctor or dentist for advice, examinations and prescriptions.

The dental teaching unit in Ysbyty Cwm Cynon provides a wide range of free oral health care to patients who are not currently registered with a dentist from the Merthyr Vale, Pontypridd, Hirwaun and Cynon Valley areas. Telephone 01443 715 000 between 8.30am and 12.30pm and 1.30pm and 4.30pm.

To access GP services in office hours contact your registered practice directly. To contact GP services Out of Hours with an urgent medical problem, telephone 08456 010 110.

Minor Injury Units (MIU)

These units treat people with minor injuries only. MIUs are located at Ysbyty Cwm Cynon and Ysbyty Cwm Rhondda These units are unable to deal with primary care problems, chronic conditions or acutely ill patients.

The opening times are as follows:

Ysbyty Cwm Rhondda  09:00 – 16:30hrs Mon-Fri (excluding Bank Holidays)

Emergency Departments (A&E)

A&E Departments are located at Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil & Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantrsant.

A&E Departments are designed to treat emergencies. An emergency is a a serious or life-threaening condition.

You should always call 999 in a life threatening emergency – if you think their life is at risk.


Calling 999 will put you through to highly trained staff that will assess the seriousness of the situation. They will dispatch an ambulance immediately to patients with life threatening conditions.

A 999 call does not always mean an ambulance will be sent, you may be offered further advice on which NHS service to access
