A dedicated senior nurse responsible for nursing and midwifery education within Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board has been appointed a Visiting Professor at the University of South Wales.

Greg McKenzie, Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB’s Senior Nurse Clinical Education, was nominated for the honour due to the excellent links he’s forged between the health board and the university during a 30-year career. Recently, for example, due to the challenges brought by the Covid pandemic, Greg and his team have worked with USW to place more than 400 student nurses and midwifes across the health board at short notice, highlighting excellent partnership working at a time of crisis.

Greg said: “I’m delighted to be honoured in this way. This is something I never expected, so it’s wonderful to be appointed. I have worked with faculty team colleagues at the university for many years and this is such lovely recognition of the partnership working developed over this time. I would personally like to thank all my education team members, health board and university colleagues for all their support.”

Greg, from the village of Pen y Fai, near Bridgend, became a registered mental health nurse in 1989, before becoming a community psychiatric nurse in the Rhondda Community Mental Health Team. In 2002, he was appointed team leader and was pivotal in the launch of the first Community Mental Health Intensive Support Team, which saw services moving away from an in-patient model to community care, and his research was one of the catalysts for service redesign within Rhondda and Taff Ely Community Health Services.

In his role as Senior Nurse Advisor in Pontypridd and Rhondda NHS Trust, Greg facilitated the RCN Clinical Leadership Programme, leading on clinical policies and continuous quality improvement across the organisation. He was appointed Senior Nurse for Education, Research and Development for the then newly-merged Cwm Taf Health Board in 2008, during which time he also worked as a Peer Inspector for Health Inspectorate Wales and a Quality Assurance reviewer for the NMC, undertaking and leading reviews across the UK.

In his current role within Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board, Greg leads on pre-registration and post-registration nurse education and has recently taken over the management of the clinical healthcare support worker team and the resuscitation department.
